Mohamed Salah has announced he will leave Premier League champions Liverpool at the end of the season, bringing an end to nine “illustrious” years at Anfield.

The 33-year-old forward joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017 and has made 435 appearances, scoring 255 goals, placing him third on the club’s all-time scorers chart behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.

Salah has won four Premier League Golden Boots and played a key role in Liverpool’s 2019/20 and 2024/25 league title triumphs, as well as their 2019 Champions League victory. His honours also include a Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.

This season, Salah has scored only five Premier League goals, down from 29 in last season’s title-winning campaign. His future at Anfield had been uncertain following a public falling-out with manager Arne Slot in December, when he criticised the club for “throwing him under the bus” after being benched for three consecutive games.

In a farewell video on social media, Salah said: “Unfortunately, the day has come. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season… Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit… Leaving is never easy… This club will always be my home, to me and to my family… Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

His agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, confirmed on X that Salah’s next destination remains unknown.

Liverpool’s official statement described Salah’s departure as the closing of “a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield". Salah was substituted in last week’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Galatasaray and missed the 2-1 league loss to Brighton due to injury.

Jamie Carragher suggested Salah will aim for a memorable exit by helping Liverpool to Champions League glory in Budapest, describing it as a “perfect send-off” befitting his competitive spirit.
