Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate a new initiative aimed at supporting athletes on Monday, with the launch of a “Sports Card” programme coupled with the distribution of allowances for national-level players.

The first phase of the project will provide financial assistance to 500 athletes.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque announced the plan during a press briefing at the National Sports Council in the capital on Saturday.

He explained that the programme is designed to formally recognise athletes who have consistently represented Bangladesh at the national level and contributed to the country’s sporting achievements.

“As part of this initiative, eligible athletes will receive sports cards, ensuring they are formally registered under a structured allowance system,” the state minister said.

He added that medal-winning athletes will be placed within a pay framework and will be entitled to regular allowances to support their training and professional development.

The state minister also highlighted additional plans of the ministry, noting that sports officers will soon be appointed in 495 upazilas nationwide to strengthen local sports administration and support grassroots talent.

Furthermore, the ministry has taken steps to reclaim playgrounds in Dhaka that are currently encroached upon, aiming to expand proper sports infrastructure for youth and athletes alike.

Aminul emphasised that these measures are part of the government’s long-term vision to create a sustainable environment for sports in Bangladesh, provide financial stability for athletes, and encourage young people to pursue sports as a career.
