The Cricket Australia contract list for 2026-27 has excluded Sam Konstas and Glenn Maxwell as selectors prioritise Test and multi-format players ahead of a demanding international schedule.

Cricket Australia announced a 21-player central contract list on Wednesday, marking a shift in squad strategy as the national team prepares for an intensive 12-month period featuring 20 Test matches across multiple conditions.

Young opener Sam Konstas and experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell were among the notable omissions. Konstas, 20, was overlooked in favour of 31-year-old Jake Weatherald, while Maxwell’s exclusion reflects a reduced emphasis on white-ball specialists in the upcoming cycle.

Matt Short was also dropped from the list, while veteran opener Usman Khawaja has retired and fast bowler Lance Morris remains sidelined due to injury.

A key selection decision was the omission of fast bowler Jhye Richardson, who recently returned to Test cricket during the Ashes. Despite expectations that he would be part of Australia’s pace transition plan, selectors instead included Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser.

George Bailey, chair of selectors, said the contract decisions reflect the team’s strategic focus on red-ball cricket.

“The next 12 months encompass a busy test schedule across a range of conditions and challenges,” Bailey said.

“This is reflected in the contract list through a predominance of Test and multi-format players for this cycle.”

Australia’s 2026-27 season begins with a home Test series against Bangladesh in August, followed by limited-overs matches in Zimbabwe and a multi-format tour of South Africa.

The schedule intensifies with a white-ball series against England before a demanding stretch of 10 Test matches in 14 weeks, including a home series against New Zealand and a five-Test tour of India.

The season will conclude with a historic 150th anniversary Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027.

Cricket analysts say the revised contract list signals a clear policy shift towards long-format dominance as Australia prepares for one of its most challenging Test cycles in recent history.
