Bangladesh’s bid to retain their SAFF Women’s Championship title came to an end on Saturday as they suffered a 3-1 defeat against India in the final at the Fatorda Stadium, settling for the runners-up position after a spirited but ultimately costly performance.
The defending champions entered the match aiming for a third consecutive title but were outplayed in key moments by an Indian side that showed greater composure, efficiency, and control under pressure. The victory secured India their record sixth SAFF Women’s Championship crown and their first in ten years.
The match, played in front of a large and energetic crowd, saw Bangladesh begin brightly and match the hosts in intensity during the first half. Coach Peter James Butler made tactical changes to the starting lineup, bringing in Tohura Khatun and Shamsunnahar Junior to strengthen the attack.
Bangladesh created early chances through Ritu Porna Chakma, who repeatedly troubled the Indian defence from the left flank. Despite several promising moves, India struck first in the 38th minute when Pyari Xaxa’s shot deflected and looped past goalkeeper Mile Akter.
However, Bangladesh responded before halftime as Ritu Porna finished off a well-worked move involving Anika and Tohura to level the score at 1-1.
The second half, however, shifted momentum decisively. India regained the lead early after Sanfida Nongrum scored with a header from close range following a cross from the right wing.
Bangladesh pushed forward in search of an equaliser, hitting the crossbar through Shamsunnahar Junior and forcing a save from the Indian goalkeeper, but defensive lapses proved costly. In the 82nd minute, a clearance error allowed Lynda Kom Serto to seal the win for India.
Despite flashes of quality, Bangladesh’s individual mistakes at crucial moments ultimately decided the contest.
