Bangladesh produced a memorable all-round performance to defeat Australia national cricket team by 86 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the opening One Day International at Mirpur on Tuesday, securing their first ODI victory over the Australians since 2005.
The victory was built on a combination of resilient batting and aggressive fast bowling, with Mosaddek Hossain and Nahid Rana emerging as the key architects of the result.
After being asked to bat, Bangladesh posted a competitive 284 for 8. Mosaddek anchored the innings with an unbeaten 86, while Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67 and opener Tanzid Hasan added 54. The trio helped Bangladesh recover from difficult phases and build a challenging total. For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the standout bowler with three wickets.
Australia’s chase got off to a disastrous start as Taskin Ahmed removed Matthew Short with the first ball of the innings, while Mustafizur Rahman quickly dismissed Marnus Labuschagne to leave the visitors in early trouble.
The match then turned decisively in Bangladesh’s favour through Nahid Rana’s hostile pace. Bowling consistently above 146 km/h, the young fast bowler dismantled Australia’s middle order. He removed captain Josh Inglis, followed by crucial wickets of Alex Carey, Liam Scott and Xavier Bartlett to finish with outstanding figures of 4 for 41.
Despite an unbeaten 52 from Cameron Green, Australia struggled to build partnerships and slumped to 191 for 9 before rain and thunderstorms halted play.
The result gives Bangladesh national cricket team a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series and marks one of their most significant victories against Australia in the format. Nahid’s pace, combined with Mosaddek’s composed innings, ensured a historic night for the hosts at Mirpur.
