A Dhaka court has acquitted cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife, Tamima Sultana Tammi, in a case over allegations of an illegal marriage, bringing to an end more than five years of legal proceedings surrounding their relationship.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam delivered the verdict on Wednesday, ruling that the allegations against the couple had not been proven. The court had fixed 10 June for the judgement after concluding final hearings on 6 May.

The case was filed on 24 February 2021 by Rakib Hasan, who alleged that Tamima Sultana Tammi married Nasir Hossain without legally dissolving her previous marriage to him.

According to court documents, Rakib Hasan and Tamima married on 26 February 2011 and have a daughter. The dispute emerged after photographs of Tamima's marriage to Nasir Hossain on 24 February 2021 went viral on social media.

Rakib Hasan subsequently filed a case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka, accusing the couple of adultery and fraud.

Following an investigation, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a charge sheet on 30 September 2021 against Nasir Hossain, Tamima Sultana Tammi and Tamima's mother, Sumi Akhter. The investigating officer, Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, stated in the report that Tamima had not divorced her first husband and that Rakib Hasan had not received any divorce notice. The report alleged that a false divorce notice had been created and concluded that Tamima remained legally married to Rakib Hasan.

However, the court later discharged Sumi Akhter from the case and proceeded against Nasir Hossain and Tamima. Charges were framed against the couple in February 2022.

A defence revision petition was rejected in February 2023, allowing the trial to proceed. The court subsequently heard testimony from 10 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant.

The evidentiary phase of the trial concluded on 16 April 2025. During the proceedings, Tamima testified in her own defence and maintained that she had legally divorced Rakib Hasan before marrying Nasir Hossain.

At the final hearing, lawyers for the complainant argued that the allegations had been established through witness testimony and documentary evidence and sought punishment for the accused. Defence lawyers rejected the allegations and requested their acquittal.

After reviewing the evidence, witness statements and submissions from both sides, the court acquitted Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana Tammi, finding that the charges could not be proved.

The ruling brings to a close one of the most closely followed legal disputes involving a Bangladesh national cricketer in recent years.
