South Korea commenced their World Cup campaign in triumphant fashion on Thursday evening, securing a vital 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic following a dramatic, late intervention from substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu.

In a fixture marked by missed opportunities and shifting momentum, it seemed for long spells that the South Koreans would be punished for their profligacy in front of goal. However, with the match entering its final ten minutes, Oh found the back of the net to seal the three points inside a sparsely populated Guadalajara Stadium.

The Asian outfit unequivocally dominated the first half, with their captain, Son Heung-min, largely orchestrating their play. The forward was a constant menace, creating numerous openings that his side ultimately failed to capitalise on. In one particularly notable sequence, Son powered an effort over the crossbar before embarking on a mesmerising, driving run down the left flank, elegantly bypassing two Czech defenders and pulling his final shot wide of the target.

Despite South Korea’s early supremacy, the second half commenced with a shock to the system. The Czech Republic broke the deadlock, despite being outplayed. Ladislav Krejci met a well-placed delivery at the near post, rising highest to generate a powerful header that left South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu with no chance.

The deficit forced a concerted response from the Koreans, and their relentless pressure finally yielded an equaliser in the 67th minute. Hwang In-beom provided a moment of sheer quality, intelligently feigning a shot to unbalance the defence before delicately caressing the ball over the onrushing Czech goalkeeper, Matej Kovar.

The Czechs subsequently had a goal ruled out for an infringement, offering South Korea a crucial reprieve. Seizing the opportunity, the influential Hwang then turned provider. Drifting out to the right flank, he delivered a precise cross that perfectly picked out Oh, allowing the substitute to slot home the decisive goal with calm precision.

As the final whistle blew on a frantic and fiercely contested encounter, a visibly relieved Son sank to the turf in celebration. The result places South Korea in a strong position as they look ahead to their next Group A fixture against co-hosts Mexico—who dispatched South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s curtain-raiser—on 18 June. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic will seek to salvage their campaign when they face South Africa in Atlanta on the same day.
