The government of Bangladesh has allocated more than Tk8.41 crore in the 2025-26 fiscal year for athletes’ welfare, including sports allowances, educational scholarships, and medical and financial assistance under a nationwide support programme.
The initiative, implemented by the National Sports Welfare Foundation, aims to support a total of 3,262 athletes and sports students across the country. Officials say the programme is designed to improve the living standards of sportspersons while encouraging emerging talent in various disciplines.
Under the allocation, 1,797 athletes have received sports allowances amounting to Tk5.39 crore. In addition, Tk32.40 lakh has been earmarked for medical and emergency financial assistance for 42 athletes who are either financially distressed or suffering from illness.
The programme also includes educational scholarships for 1,423 promising and emerging sports students from different regions. A total of Tk2.70 crore has been allocated for this scholarship component, aimed at supporting academic development alongside sporting careers.
Authorities say the combined support package is intended to provide relief and stability to current and former athletes facing economic hardship, while also nurturing the next generation of sports talent in the country.
The National Sports Welfare Foundation noted that such financial assistance programmes play an important role in maintaining athlete morale and ensuring continued participation in sports at both national and grassroots levels.
