Lionel Messi described it as a “beautiful moment” after producing the first World Cup hat-trick of his illustrious career and drawing level with Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.

The Argentina captain delivered a masterclass in his side’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening Group J match at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Tuesday. The three goals took Messi’s World Cup tally to 16, equalling the record previously held solely by German legend Miroslav Klose.

Speaking after the match, the 38-year-old forward said sharing the occasion with his family, teammates and supporters made the achievement even more meaningful.

“To enjoy this with my family and teammates is a really beautiful moment,” Messi said, expressing his delight after another milestone in a career filled with records.

The performance also strengthened hopes that defending champions Argentina can retain the World Cup title and become the first nation since Brazil to win consecutive tournaments.

Messi praised the unity and strength within the squad, stressing the importance of beginning the campaign with a victory. He also thanked Argentine fans, whose overwhelming presence turned the Kansas City venue into a sea of sky blue and white.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni was equally full of admiration for his captain, admitting he had run out of ways to describe Messi’s brilliance.

“For 20 years he has been doing things like this and inspiring everyone who watches him,” Scaloni said.

The Argentina coach is now focused on the team’s next challenge against Austria on Monday. A second consecutive win would put Argentina in a strong position to secure qualification for the knockout stage before their final group match.

With another record matched and potentially more to come, Messi’s remarkable World Cup journey continues to add new chapters to an already legendary career.
