France captain Kylian Mbappe has become the national team’s all-time leading goal scorer after scoring twice in a 3-1 World Cup victory over Senegal on Tuesday, surpassing Olivier Giroud’s previous record of 57 goals.
The Real Madrid forward reached the milestone during France’s opening Group I match at the New York-New Jersey Stadium, where he struck in the 66th minute to put his side ahead. He later sealed his achievement in style, scoring his 58th international goal with a powerful strike in second-half stoppage time.
Mbappé, 27, delivered the landmark performance under intense scrutiny heading into the tournament, but responded emphatically as France produced a strong second-half display to secure all three points.
Former record-holder Olivier Giroud, who was working as a BBC pundit, congratulated his successor, saying: “Congrats, Kylian. You made it. I'm really happy for him.”
Giroud also revealed that Mbappé had promised to give him his match shirt after breaking the record.
The result ensured a winning start for France in Group I as they continue their World Cup campaign.
Les Bleus will next face Iraq in Philadelphia on Monday before concluding their group-stage fixtures against Norway on 26 June.
With the record now in his name, Mbappe further strengthens his status as one of France’s greatest ever forwards, adding another milestone to an already decorated international career.
