Colombia launched their FIFA World Cup campaign in impressive fashion on Wednesday, defeating tournament debutants Uzbekistan 3-1 in their opening Group K encounter at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
A crowd of 80,824 spectators witnessed a lively contest in which Colombia's star forward Luis Diaz played a decisive role. The Bayern Munich attacker delivered an outstanding all-round performance, contributing an assist, scoring a goal, and striking the post as Colombia secured all three points.
The South American side broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Diaz produced a brilliant lofted pass into the penalty area. Daniel Munoz met the delivery with a superb volley, giving Colombia a deserved lead before halftime.
Uzbekistan, appearing in their first-ever World Cup, responded positively and made history shortly after the break. Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored the nation's maiden World Cup goal after reacting quickest to a rebound. The ball fell kindly to him after Colombian goalkeeper pressure denied Eldor Shomurodov's initial volley, allowing Fayzullaev to head home and level the match.
Colombia regained control when Diaz found the net himself. His effort restored the lead, although Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov will feel he could have done better to keep the shot out.
As Uzbekistan pushed forward in search of another equaliser, Colombia sealed victory in the closing moments. Jaminton Campaz put the result beyond doubt with a well-taken header in stoppage time, ensuring a comfortable 3-1 final score.
The victory sends Colombia to the top of Group K after the other group fixture between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo ended in a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. The result gives the Colombians an early advantage as they look to progress to the knockout stages, while Uzbekistan will take encouragement from a spirited performance despite the defeat.
