Cristiano Ronaldo endured a subdued start to his record-equalling sixth World Cup campaign as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening Group K fixture on Wednesday.
The Portuguese star, 41, struggled to influence the game as DR Congo celebrated a landmark moment in their football history by claiming their first-ever point at a World Cup match. Yoane Wissa’s well-taken header cancelled out an early strike from João Neves, ensuring a share of the spoils for the African side.
DR Congo, competing at the tournament for the first time since 1974 when the nation was known as Zaire, impressed with their resilience and organisation, standing firm against a dominant Portuguese side.
Portugal had made a dream start when Neves rose to meet Pedro Neto’s cross and powered a header into the net after just six minutes. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, they were unable to convert control into further goals.
The Congolese side struck back deep into first-half stoppage time when Wissa climbed unmarked to head past Diogo Costa, sending their fans and bench into jubilant celebrations after scoring their first-ever World Cup goal.
Portugal also had moments of frustration, including a disallowed overhead kick from João Cancelo for offside, while Ronaldo missed two clear chances, sending both efforts wide after being set up by Francisco Conceição.
Elsewhere, Portugal’s squad paid tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota with wristbands provided by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
