Embracing the national slogan, ‘When Sports becomes a profession, every family gets security’, the Dhaka District Sports Office on Thursday organised a sports competition and fun festival for children with special needs.

The day-long event was officially inaugurated in the morning at the SWID Bangladesh premises under the annual sports programme 2025-26 of the Dhaka District Sports Office.

The festival featured various sports and recreational activities tailored for children with special needs, including table tennis, badminton, boys’ sprint races, musical ball-passing games, dance performances, and cultural activities. The programme provided participants with an inclusive platform to showcase their abilities and promote confidence, teamwork, and enjoyment through sports.

Legendary athlete, Guinness World Records holder, and Independence Award recipient Zobera Rahman Linu graced the opening ceremony as the guest of honour.

Dr Md Shahnewaz Chowdhury, president of SWID Bangladesh, presided over the programme. Special guests included Saleh Mohammad, vice president of SWID Bangladesh, and Md Mahbubul Munir, secretary general of the organisation.

Delivering the welcome address, Dhaka district sports officer Suman Kumar Mitra said, “This sports competition and fun festival has been organised under the annual sports programme of the department of sports.”

“Through events such as table tennis, badminton, and sprint races, the programme provides children with special needs with a unique opportunity to discover, develop, and showcase their hidden sporting talents,” he added.

At the conclusion of the festival, prizes were distributed among the winners of the various competitions.
