As the opening round of group fixtures concluded, Thursday’s matches featured several nations eager to secure progression to the last 32 of the competition.
Following a lacklustre 1-1 draw with Qatar in their opening Group B fixture, the Swiss side regained momentum with a comprehensive victory over the Bosnians at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Johan Manzambi netted twice, with Ruben Vargas and Granit Xhaka also locating the target during a late attacking surge. The result places Switzerland at the summit of their group with four points, bringing the knockout stages firmly into view as they aim to progress beyond the last 16 for the first time in their history.
Conversely, Bosnia-Herzegovina now faces the prospect of early elimination after famously eliminating Italy in a play-off to qualify for the tournament. The damaging defeat leaves them languishing on a single point after two matches.
In Group A, South Africa managed to revive their slim qualification chances following a dismal 2-0 loss to Mexico last week, a match in which they saw two players dismissed. They secured a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta, courtesy of a late penalty from Teboho Mokoena, which cancelled out Michal Sadilek’s opening goal for the Czech side.
The result leaves both nations tied on one point, trailing two points behind co-hosts Mexico and South Korea. To advance, both South Africa and the Czech Republic will likely need victories in their final group fixtures. South Africa will next face South Korea, while the Czechs face a formidable challenge against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
A victory for Mexico over South Korea in their upcoming fixture in Guadalajara would guarantee them the top spot in the group. The highly anticipated match has already been overshadowed by controversy, following reports that Mexican authorities intercepted a drone hovering above the South Korean training camp earlier this week.
Away from the pitch, Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has received clearance to enter Canada for his side’s upcoming fixture against Germany on Saturday. A source close to the player confirmed the decision, which follows an initial visa denial linked to alleged spot-fixing.
The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) had previously stated Wahi would be unavailable for the match in Toronto. Canadian officials reportedly delayed the visa to seek further clarification of his legal status before ultimately authorising his entry. The 23-year-old was recently questioned by French authorities about an unusual betting pattern surrounding a yellow card he received while playing for Nice against Metz in Ligue 1.
