The Netherlands took a major step towards securing a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages after producing an impressive 5-1 victory over Sweden in Houston on Saturday.
Heading into the Group F contest, both sides knew a win would significantly boost their chances of reaching the last 32.
Sweden arrived full of confidence following a convincing opening-match triumph over Tunisia, but they struggled to cope with a Dutch side that attacked with pace and precision throughout.
The Netherlands made a strong start and were two goals ahead within the first 17 minutes. Forward Brian Brobbey proved the early difference, finding the net twice to put his side firmly in control and silence the Swedish challenge.
Sweden attempted to regroup after the break, but the Dutch tightened their grip on the match almost immediately.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo struck twice in quick succession during the opening minutes of the second half, extending the lead to 4-0 and effectively ending any hopes of a Swedish comeback.
Anthony Elanga managed to pull one goal back for Sweden, but it did little to alter the outcome. The Netherlands continued to dominate possession and create opportunities before Crysencio Summerville added a fifth goal in the closing stages to complete a memorable evening for the Dutch.
The result lifts the Netherlands to four points from two matches after drawing with Japan in their tournament opener.
Combined with a strong goal difference, the victory leaves them in a commanding position to progress from the group and move into the knockout phase of the expanded 48-team World Cup.
For Sweden, the heavy defeat was a rare setback on football’s biggest stage. It marked the first time they had conceded five goals in a World Cup match since the 1958 final, when they were beaten 5-2 by Brazil.
With attacking quality on display and qualification firmly within reach, the Netherlands have emerged as one of the teams to watch as the tournament gathers momentum.
