Egypt has won a World Cup match for the very first time. The team beat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver on Sunday, putting them closer to the knockout rounds.
New Zealand took the lead just 15 minutes into the game when Finn Surman scored a header. However, Egypt did not give up. They fought back to earn a historic victory that puts them at the top of Group G with four points. Now, Egypt only needs a tie in their next game against Iran on Friday to move on to the final 32 teams.
Egypt tied the game when Mostafa Zico, who is named after the famous Brazilian player, headed the ball into the net from a pass by his teammate Mohamed Hany.
In the 67th minute, star player Mohamed Salah took control. After passing the ball back and forth with Zico, Salah kicked a perfect left-footed shot past the goalkeeper to give Egypt the lead. Late in the game, Salah helped his team score again. He passed the ball to Trezeguet, who scored with a low header to make sure Egypt won the game.
After the match, Salah discussed how much the win meant. He said people will look back on this day as a great moment in history. He was also pleased to see so many Egyptian fans in the crowd, saying their loud cheering made it feel like they were playing back home in Egypt.
In the other Group G match, Belgium and Iran tied 0-0. On Friday, Belgium will play New Zealand in Vancouver, while Egypt travels to Seattle to play their important final group match against Iran.
