England are officially through to the next round of the World Cup! They won Group L after a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Panama. However, Manager Thomas Tuchel knows his players need to play even better if they want to win the tournament.
After an exciting 4-2 win against Croatia in their first game, England found it harder to score against Ghana and Panama. In the match against Panama, it took an hour before Real Madrid Midfielder Jude Bellingham finally scored the first goal. Shortly after, Captain Harry Kane scored the second. That goal was huge—it made Kane England’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 11 goals!
This win keeps England’s dream alive of ending their 60-year wait for a World Cup trophy. Next up, they will play the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 32. If they win that, they might have to play against one of the host nations, Mexico. Midfielder Jude Bellingham said winning the group was their first big goal, but he knows tougher matches are on the way.
Good news for the attack
The Panama game gave Manager Thomas Tuchel some excellent choices for his attacking lineup. Forward Marcus Rashford played very well on the left side of the field. Winger Bukayo Saka also returned from an injury and helped set up the first goal. Both players might keep their starting spots for the next game.
Rashford told the media that the team still haven't played their absolute best. He actually thinks this is a good thing, because it means the team still has plenty of room to improve as the games get harder.
Worries in defense
Even though England didn’t let the other teams score in their last two games, they still have some problems at the back. Defender Jarell Quansah had to leave the game early because of an injury. This leaves England with very few choices for the right-back position.
Despite these injuries, Manager Thomas Tuchel is confident. He believes the team will continue to improve as they progress through the tournament.
