The Democratic Republic of Congo has made history by reaching the next round of the World Cup. They beat Uzbekistan 3-1 in Atlanta, marking their first time ever winning a match at the World Cup finals.
This historic win guarantees that DR Congo will now play against England in the round of 32.
The game did not start easily for the African team. Uzbekistan took the lead after just 10 minutes when Captain Eldor Shomurodov scored a brilliant goal by chipping the ball over Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. Uzbekistan Manager Fabio Cannavaro wanted his players to leave a proud mark in their first World Cup appearance, and they started the match with impressive energy.
DR Congo thought they had tied the game shortly after when Midfielder Nathanaël Mbuku scored a beautiful goal. However, the referee cancelled it after a video replay showed a small foul earlier in the play against Defender Sherzod Nasrullaev.
A second-half comeback
DR Congo had a tough time breaking through the defence until the second half. The turning point came when Defender Abdukodir Khusanov made a reckless tackle on Forward Yoane Wissa inside the penalty area. Forward Yoane Wissa stepped up, took the penalty kick, and scored easily to tie the game at 1-1. The massive crowd of Congo fans cheered wildly.
The game changed completely in just two minutes. Forward Meschack Elia took a shot that slowed down just enough for Striker Fiston Mayele to run in and kick the ball into the back of the net, giving DR Congo the lead.
Right before the match ended, Forward Yoane Wissa secured the victory. He took a shot from the edge of the penalty box and curled the ball into the corner of the net for his second goal of the night.
After the match, Manager Sebastien Desabre praised his team. He said, 'Forward, Yoane Wissa is playing his best football right now, putting a tough club season at Newcastle United firmly behind him.'
DR Congo are now preparing for a massive game against England, carrying great momentum and the hopes of their happy fans.
