Erling Haaland struck four minutes from time as Norway secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Tuesday, earning the country’s first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match and setting up a last-16 meeting with Brazil.
The Manchester City forward scored his fifth goal of the tournament by turning home Patrick Berg’s cross from close range in the 86th minute, ending a fiercely contested encounter in Texas.
Norway will now face five-time world champions Brazil on Sunday in New Jersey, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
The match took time to find its rhythm, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities during the opening stages.
Ivory Coast threatened first when defender Ghislain Konan surged into the penalty area before firing into the side netting.
Shortly afterwards, the African side were left frustrated when winger Yan Diomande was brought down during a counter-attack, but referee Jesus Valenzuela chose not to issue a booking.
The 19-year-old Diomande continued to trouble Norway’s defence as Ivory Coast gradually gained control, particularly down the left flank.
Despite enjoying little service, Haaland managed Norway’s first meaningful effort, although his header was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
The breakthrough came six minutes before half-time through Antonio Nusa. Collecting a pass from captain Martin Odegaard, the winger cut inside and curled a superb effort into the top corner, leaving Fofana with no chance.
The outstanding finish gave Norway momentum before the interval, and Haaland almost doubled the advantage moments later, only for Ibrahim Sangare to produce a crucial block inside the penalty area.
Ivory Coast emerged strongly after the restart and created a series of chances. Nicolas Pepe was denied by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland as the pressure mounted.
Norway then came within inches of extending their lead from a corner, but substitute Amad Diallo cleared the ball off the goal line to keep his side in the contest.
The Manchester United winger soon made an impact at the other end. In the 74th minute, Diallo weaved past two defenders before producing an excellent finish to level the match and revive Ivory Coast’s hopes.
With extra time appearing increasingly likely, Norway found the decisive moment.
Patrick Berg delivered a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, where Haaland reacted quickest to poke the ball over the line from close range.
Ivory Coast pushed forward in search of another equaliser, and Diallo almost forced extra time with a well-struck free-kick in stoppage time. However, Nyland produced an excellent save to preserve Norway’s advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a landmark result for Stale Solbakken’s side, who progressed from the group stage as runners-up behind France and have now reached the last 16 with a historic knockout victory.
Norway’s reward is a high-profile meeting with Brazil, as they look to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
