Mbappe, Kane headline World Cup third-place clash

France and England will conclude their World Cup campaigns on Saturday when they face each other in the third-place play-off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with both sides seeking to end disappointing tournaments on a positive note after painful semi-final defeats.

France arrived in the last four as one of the tournament's standout teams but were outplayed by Spain, losing 2-0 after a display widely criticised for its tactical shortcomings. England suffered another World Cup setback a day later, surrendering an early lead before losing 2-1 to Argentina in Atlanta.

The match will also bring the curtain down on Didier Deschamps' 14-year spell as France manager. The 57-year-old, who has faced criticism for his tactical approach against Spain, leaves after guiding France to the 2018 World Cup title, the 2022 final in Qatar and another semi-final appearance in the United States.

Although the match carries little significance in terms of silverware, it could prove decisive in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot. France captain Kylian Mbappe shares the lead on eight goals with Argentina's Lionel Messi and has the chance to move ahead against England. The Real Madrid forward could also overtake Messi in the all-time World Cup scoring charts, where he currently has 20 goals, one behind the Argentine captain's 21.

England's Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham remain in contention after scoring six goals each during the tournament. For Kane, who turns 33 later this month, the match could represent his final World Cup appearance, although the Bayern Munich striker declined to discuss his international future following the defeat to Argentina.

England manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to rotate his squad after a physically demanding campaign that included a last-16 trip to high-altitude Mexico City, a gruelling quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami and the exhausting semi-final defeat. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could make his World Cup debut, while striker Ollie Watkins is also in line for a starting role.

Deschamps may also freshen his side by handing veteran midfielder N'Golo Kante his first appearance of the tournament. The former World Cup winner has yet to play a minute in the United States but could feature as France bid to finish third before their long-serving manager departs.
