VATICAN CITY,

On Thursday, King Charles III became the first British monarch to publicly pray alongside the pope during a service presided over by Leo XIV and broadcast live on Vatican TV.

As monarch, Charles is the supreme governor of the Church of England, which was founded 500 years ago when English King Henry VIII broke from the Roman Catholic Church. The ceremony took place at the Sistine Chapel.
