PHNOM PENH,

Cambodia and Thailand exchanged accusations on Wednesday following reports of new clashes along their shared border, after Bangkok announced a pause in implementing a US-backed peace deal.

Cambodian Information Minister Neth Pheaktra told AFP that “Thai soldiers opened fire on civilians,” injuring at least five people in Prey Chan village, Banteay Meanchey Province, citing figures from local authorities.

Richa Suksuwanon, deputy spokesperson of the Royal Thai Army, said soldiers had heard small arms fire from the Cambodian side around 4:00pm (0900 GMT) but “did not return fire,” describing the incident as “a provocation by the Cambodian side.”
