The White House doubled back on Wednesday following two episodes in which President Donald Trump furiously approached female reporters from US news outlets.

It labelled ABC News a “Democrat spin operation masquerading as a broadcast network” after Trump slammed TV correspondent Mary Bruce in the Oval Office on Tuesday.

After Trump said “quiet, piggy” to Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey aboard Air Force One on Friday, the White House said that “if you’re going to give it, you have to be able to take it.”

Even Trump, who is known for his aggressive approach to what he refers to as “fake news”, reacted harshly.

He reacted angrily during Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to the White House on Tuesday, when ABC’s Bruce questioned him about the murder of a dissident Saudi journalist in 2018, the Trump family’s financial ties, and the Jeffrey Epstein issue.

In the Oval Office, Trump warned Bruce not to “embarrass our guest”, calling her a “terrible reporter” and threatening ABC’s broadcast licence.

The White House responded on Wednesday with a fact sheet collecting examples from the previous eight years of what it described as “a deliberate deception to wage war on President Trump and the millions of Americans who elected him to multiple terms.”

It was similarly unapologetic about Bloomberg’s Lucey, who asked Trump why he would not reveal information about Epstein, accusing the wire service journalist of “unprofessional behaviour”.

In video footage of the event, Lucey and another reporter were seen attempting to speak at the same moment, which is customary when members of the press corps try to catch the president’s attention.

A White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated, “This reporter acted inappropriately and unprofessionally towards her colleagues on the plane.” If you’re going to give it, you must also be able to receive it.

The White House Correspondents Association, an independent group that represents journalists who cover the US president, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
