A schoolteacher has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen on the campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, police have said.

The victim, identified as Rao Danish Ali, was a teacher at ABK High School, which is located on the university campus. The shooting took place at around 9:00pm on Wednesday near the university’s central library, according to Indian media reports, including The Hindu.

Police said Danish Ali was walking with two colleagues when two men arrived on a scooter and blocked their path. One of the attackers reportedly threatened him at gunpoint before opening fire.

Witnesses said the assailant told the teacher, “You don’t know me yet—now you will,” moments before he was shot. Danish Ali was critically injured and rushed to the nearby Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, where doctors declared him dead.

Aligarh Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadav said both attackers fired shots before fleeing the scene.

Police have formed six special teams to investigate the killing and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects.

AMU Proctor Mohammad Wasim Ali said police and university authorities reached the scene shortly after reports of gunfire.

The killing occurred on the same day that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told the state assembly that law and order in the state had improved.

Police said the motive behind the killing remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
