SAN FRANCISCO,
US telecommunications company Verizon experienced a widespread service outage on Wednesday, leaving millions of customers without mobile and internet access across parts of the country, particularly along the east coast.
The disruption began around midday in New York, where Verizon is headquartered, and continued for several hours into the evening. Users in major cities reported being unable to make calls, send messages or access mobile data.
In a statement published on its website, Verizon apologised for the disruption, acknowledging the scale of the impact. “Today, we let many of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry,” the company said, adding that engineering teams were working continuously to restore services.
Independent outage tracker DownDetector recorded more than 1.5 million reports of problems related to Verizon’s mobile and internet services. Complaints continued to be logged late into the night, suggesting that some customers remained affected hours after the issue began.
Verizon said teams would work through the night to bring services fully back online but did not provide a timeline for complete restoration. The company also declined to give details about the cause of the outage or the full extent of the disruption.
The incident caused frustration among customers and renewed questions about network resilience as reliance on mobile connectivity continues to grow across the United States.
