Nuuk,

A senior Greenlandic minister has welcomed expressions of solidarity from European countries following a warning by US President Donald Trump that he could impose new tariffs linked to disputes over the future of the Arctic island.

Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s minister for mineral resources, said she was encouraged by the response from European governments that have been singled out by Washington in recent days. Writing on LinkedIn on Saturday, she said she was “amazed” by the initial reactions and expressed hope that diplomacy and cooperation among allies would prevail.

The comments came after President Trump threatened to introduce tariffs on imports from eight European countries that recently sent military personnel to Greenland. The deployments were announced as part of joint training and security activities in the Arctic, an area that has gained strategic importance amid rising geopolitical tensions and competition over natural resources.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs greater control over Greenland, citing national security concerns and the island’s mineral potential. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, holds significant reserves of critical minerals considered essential to the global energy transition, including rare earth elements used in renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and defence systems.

Several European leaders whose countries were named in the tariff threat condemned the proposal, describing it as unacceptable and warning against the use of trade measures to pressure allies. Danish officials reiterated that Greenland’s future could only be determined by its people and stressed that existing defence arrangements already include close cooperation with the United States through NATO.

Nathanielsen did not address the tariff threat directly in detail but framed the European response as a sign of strong alliances and shared values. Greenland’s government has sought to balance its growing strategic relevance with efforts to attract responsible investment in mining and energy development while maintaining political autonomy.

The episode highlights the increasing intersection between trade policy, security concerns, and access to critical minerals in the Arctic. As demand for resources linked to clean energy technologies rises, Greenland’s strategic importance has grown, drawing attention from global powers and complicating diplomatic relations.

For Greenlandic officials, the latest exchange demonstrates the value of international partnerships as the island navigates growing geopolitical interest in its territory and resources.
