A police officer has been killed and two others injured after an explosive device detonated near a patrol vehicle outside a major railway station in Moscow, Russian authorities have said.

The blast occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday at Savyolovsky railway station square in northern Moscow, one of the capital’s principal transport hubs. According to a statement from the interior ministry published on Telegram, a man approached traffic police officers who were seated inside their patrol car before an explosion took place.

Officials said the suspected attacker died at the scene. Two officers were taken for medical treatment, while one officer succumbed to his injuries.

Initial reports from the ministry suggested the perpetrator had fled. However, after reviewing surveillance footage and examining the site, investigators confirmed that the man was found dead at the location of the blast.

Images circulated by local media showed a heavily damaged police vehicle with shattered windows positioned near railway tracks. State news agency TASS reported that although the patrol car sustained significant damage, it did not catch fire. The surrounding area was sealed off by security personnel and emergency responders, with several ambulances dispatched to the scene.

Authorities have not yet disclosed details about the type of explosive device used or the identity and possible motive of the attacker.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which handles major criminal cases, said it had launched a formal inquiry on charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and the illegal possession of explosive materials.

The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in Russia during its ongoing war in Ukraine. In December 2025, two police officers were killed in an explosion in southern Moscow while attempting to question a suspicious individual near their vehicle. That incident occurred close to the site where a senior Russian military figure had been killed days earlier.

In recent years, several high-profile attacks targeting Russian military and security officials have taken place on Russian territory. Earlier this month, a senior military intelligence officer was shot and wounded in an attack that Moscow attributed to Ukraine.

Tuesday’s explosion at Savyolovsky station adds to a series of security incidents that have underscored the volatile climate inside Russia as the conflict with Ukraine continues into its fifth year.
