Kim Yo Jong has been promoted to a senior position within North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, strengthening her influence at the centre of power in Pyongyang as the country holds a major party congress.
State news agency Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Yo Jong was elevated to the role of department director within the party’s powerful central committee during the once-in-five-years congress currently underway in the capital.
While KCNA did not specify which department she will oversee, Kim Yo Jong previously held a senior position within the party’s propaganda apparatus and has played a prominent role in state messaging, diplomacy and nuclear policy.
The Workers’ Party congress, attended by thousands of party officials, is one of North Korea’s most significant political gatherings. It sets direction on domestic governance, foreign policy, defence strategy and economic planning. The event is widely viewed as an opportunity for Kim Jong Un to consolidate authority and reshape the leadership structure.
Kim Yo Jong has emerged in recent years as one of the most influential figures in North Korea. She was closely involved in diplomatic engagements with the United States, including preparations for summits between Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump in Singapore and Hanoi.
Analyst Ahn Chan-il said Kim Yo Jong is among the few individuals whom Kim Jong Un fully trusts, citing her experience and proximity to the leadership.
Her international profile rose sharply in 2018 when she attended the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, becoming one of the first members of the Kim family to visit South Korea since the Korean War. Since then, she has frequently issued statements criticising Washington and Seoul, though her rhetoric has moderated somewhat since South Korean President Lee Jae-myung took office.
Lim Eul-chul of the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University said the new appointment effectively elevates Kim Yo Jong to ministerial rank within the party hierarchy.
Born in 1988, Kim Yo Jong is one of the children of former leader Kim Jong Il and was educated in Switzerland alongside her brother. Following Kim Jong Il’s death in 2011, she rose quickly within the party structure as Kim Jong Un consolidated power.
Despite her public prominence, limited official information is available regarding her personal life. North Korean state media has not confirmed details about her marital status or family, although she has been seen in recent footage attending public events with two children.
The ongoing party congress is only the ninth such gathering under the Kim family’s decades-long rule. Observers are also watching for potential developments regarding Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, who has appeared at several high-profile state events and is viewed by South Korean intelligence officials as a possible future successor.
The congress unfolds amid renewed global attention on North Korea’s nuclear programme and regional diplomacy. While US President Donald Trump has indicated openness to renewed dialogue, Pyongyang has not yet resumed top-level engagement.
Kim Yo Jong’s promotion signals continuity within the Kim dynasty and reinforces the central role of trusted family members in North Korea’s political system.
