The Washington Post reported that US President Donald Trump’s decision to launch what he described as Operation Epic Fury followed weeks of reported private and public lobbying from regional allies, including Israel and Saudi Arabia.

According to the report, citing officials and regional sources, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly advocated for stronger action against Iran. Saudi Arabia’s position was described as more nuanced - with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly raising concerns in private discussions with US officials about Iran’s growing capabilities, while publicly emphasising diplomatic engagement.

The report claims that the Saudi leadership communicated concerns that delaying action could allow Tehran to strengthen its strategic position. At the same time, Riyadh issued statements stressing that its territory would not be used for military operations.

Separately, Trump outlined two primary justifications for launching the operation. In remarks to media outlets, he cited the breakdown of nuclear negotiations with Iran in Geneva and allegations that Tehran had resumed development of nuclear facilities previously targeted during earlier regional conflicts.

Trump also stated that, during preparations for his address announcing the operation, he asked advisers to compile a historical review of reported Iran-linked attacks over the past decades. He claimed the review showed repeated regional activities attributed to Iran.

The developments have heightened tensions across the Middle East, with diplomatic reactions and security concerns growing in response to the escalation.
