The Israeli military said on Friday that it had struck a Hezbollah command centre and a drone depot in a “broad-scale wave of strikes” overnight in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The attacks followed an evacuation warning issued by the Israeli army for the area, home to hundreds of thousands of people and a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah, prompting residents to flee in panic.

“As part of the strikes, an executive council’s command centre and a facility storing UAVs (drones) used by Hezbollah for attacks against the State of Israel were targeted,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

Lebanon was drawn into the conflict on Monday after Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel to avenge the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the US‑Israeli strikes that triggered the war.

The Israeli army said it had conducted 26 waves of strikes in the southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh, since the start of its campaign in Lebanon this week.

Lebanon’s health ministry reported on Thursday that 123 people had been killed and 683 wounded across the country in the Israeli strikes.
