Libyan prosecutors announced on Thursday that they have identified three suspects in the killing of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi last month, though their identities were not disclosed.
Seif al-Islam, once considered by some as Libya’s heir apparent, was shot dead in his home in Zintan in early February. The prosecutor’s office said its investigation established the suspects’ meeting place, the time they went to the scene, and their involvement in the crime, leading to arrest orders being issued.
Although Seif al-Islam held no official position under his father Muammar Gaddafi, he had been seen as Libya’s de facto prime minister and projected an image of moderation before the 2011 Arab Spring uprising. That image unravelled when he threatened “rivers of blood” during the protests.
He was arrested by Libyan authorities in 2011 following an international criminal court warrant for alleged crimes against humanity. Though sentenced to death by a Tripoli court, he was later granted amnesty.
Seif al-Islam’s French lawyer, Marcel Ceccaldi, said he was killed by a “four-man commando” who stormed his residence.
