The United States government has stepped up efforts to encourage undocumented migrants to leave the country voluntarily by offering free flights and a financial incentive of $2,600 under a programme launched by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The initiative, known as Project Homecoming, was introduced following the start of President Donald Trump’s second term and aims to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants through voluntary departures rather than enforcement actions.

As part of the campaign, DHS has circulated promotional materials featuring global landmarks such as the Taj Mahal in India, along with iconic sites from Colombia and China, to reach migrants from diverse backgrounds. Officials say the programme allows participants to return to their home countries in a safe and orderly manner.

Migrants interested in the scheme are instructed to use the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) mobile application to register their intent to leave. Through the app, applicants can submit personal information, receive travel guidance, and access details about the financial assistance provided under the programme.

According to DHS data, more than 2.2 million individuals have participated in the initiative since early 2025. The programme has also seen an increase in incentives, with the exit bonus rising from $1,000 at launch to the current $2,600.

Officials say the scheme enables migrants to depart without facing detention, arrest, or other legal penalties, offering what they describe as a more humane and cost-effective approach to immigration management.
