Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Thursday that an Israeli airstrike had killed Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) navy, along with several senior officers of the naval command.
In a video statement, Israel Katz described the operation as “precise and lethal,” saying, “The man who was directly responsible for terrorist operations, including mining and obstructing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, has been eliminated.”
He added that the strike targeted Tangsiri and other high-ranking officials in Iran’s naval hierarchy, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
Since the joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran began on 28 February, Israel has reported the deaths of multiple senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader and the Islamic Republic’s security chief.
The campaign has focused heavily on Iran’s military and strategic assets, particularly targeting leadership figures deemed responsible for attacks on shipping lanes and regional security threats.
In the past week alone, Israeli forces conducted several airstrikes against Iranian naval assets in the Caspian Sea. These attacks reportedly destroyed or damaged multiple vessels, including missile-equipped ships, patrol craft, and support vessels, significantly weakening the operational capabilities of Iran’s naval forces.
The Israeli military described the latest operation as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard international shipping lanes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, which has been a flashpoint in the escalating Middle East conflict.
No immediate comment was available from Iranian authorities regarding the strike or the reported deaths.
