At least 22 migrants lost their lives after a rubber boat carrying them capsized in the Mediterranean Sea near Greece while attempting to reach Europe from Libya.

Authorities said most of the victims are believed to be nationals of Bangladesh and Sudan.

The Greek Coast Guard confirmed on 27 March that 26 people were rescued from the vessel, including 21 Bangladeshis. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, as officials fear more individuals may be missing.

Reports from authorities and survivors indicate that at least 10 of the deceased were from Sunamganj District in Bangladesh, deepening the sense of tragedy in the region.

Family members and local sources have identified several victims, including Nuruzzaman Moyna, Sajidur Rahman, Shahan Ehia and Mujibur Rahman from Derai Upazila.

Among the dead are also Fahim Ahmed Munna from Dowarabazar Upazila, and several individuals including Mohammad Suhanur, Sheikh Ahmed, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Naeem and Aminur Rahman from Jagannathpur Upazila.

According to relatives, the victims had undertaken the risky journey to Europe through Libya with the assistance of human traffickers, hoping for better economic prospects. Some had previously worked in Middle Eastern countries before attempting the sea crossing.

The rescued migrants, found near the island of Crete, include individuals from Bangladesh as well as South Sudan and Chad. Two survivors are currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at a hospital in Heraklion.

The incident has left families in Sunamganj in mourning, with many calling on the government to take steps to bring back the bodies of the deceased.

Police officials said reports have been received, though full verification is still underway.
