Iranian state-affiliated media have reported that military forces are searching for the pilot of a United States fighter jet allegedly brought down by the country’s air defence systems, in what could mark a significant escalation in regional tensions.
The Fars news agency said on Friday that a search operation had been initiated following an incident earlier in the day in which an American aircraft was reportedly struck. Details surrounding the circumstances of the event remain limited and have not been independently verified.
According to the report, local authorities believe the aircraft was hit while flying over central Iran, with initial indications suggesting it may have crashed in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. Footage broadcast by a regional television channel purported to show debris said to be from the downed jet, although the authenticity of the images has not been confirmed.
A statement attributed to local police urged residents in the area to assist in locating the pilot or pilots, offering a financial reward for information leading to their capture. Such appeals underscore the seriousness with which Iranian authorities appear to be treating the incident.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the Middle East, did not immediately respond to requests for comment when approached by international media.
If confirmed, the incident would represent the first reported case of a US fighter aircraft being downed in Iranian territory since the outbreak of hostilities involving the United States and Israel against Iran in late February.
The absence of official confirmation from Washington, coupled with reliance on Iranian media sources, means key aspects of the incident remain unclear. However, the report is likely to heighten concerns over a further deterioration in the already fragile security environment across the region.
