Authorities in Abu Dhabi have confirmed that emergency teams are responding to multiple fires at a major petrochemical facility after debris from intercepted aerial threats fell on the site.

In a statement on Sunday, officials said the incident occurred at the Borouge petrochemicals plant, where fragments from missiles and drones—neutralised by the United Arab Emirates’ air defence systems—ignited fires within the complex.

Operations at the facility were immediately suspended as a precaution, with teams working to contain the situation and assess the extent of the damage. Authorities said no injuries had been reported.

The incident follows earlier confirmation from the UAE Ministry of Defence that its air defence systems were actively engaging incoming missile and drone threats as part of ongoing regional hostilities.

While the interception prevented a direct strike, the falling debris highlights the broader risks posed to critical energy infrastructure as the conflict continues to expand across the Gulf.

The Borouge facility is a key component of the UAE’s petrochemical sector, and any disruption could have implications for industrial output, though officials have not yet indicated the scale of operational impact.

Emergency services remain on site as containment efforts continue, with further updates expected once a full damage assessment is completed.
