China has called on Iran to take steps to ensure the uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, amid growing international concern over tensions in the strategic waterway.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the appeal during talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, according to official statements.

Wang urged Tehran to work toward restoring normal navigation in the strait, which is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

He emphasised that while Iran’s sovereignty and legitimate security interests in the Strait of Hormuz must be respected and safeguarded, equal importance must be given to ensuring the freedom and safety of international shipping through the passage.

Wang said there is broad and unanimous international interest in keeping the strait open and stable, given its importance for global energy supply chains and trade flows. Any disruption, he noted, could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy, particularly in the energy sector.

The Chinese foreign minister also reiterated Beijing’s support for de-escalation efforts in the region.

He called for maintaining a ceasefire and resuming diplomatic negotiations to address ongoing disputes and prevent further escalation of tensions.

According to Chinese diplomatic sources, the discussion reflects Beijing’s broader position of encouraging dialogue and stability in the Middle East, while protecting key international shipping lanes that are vital for global energy security.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude oil shipments passing through it daily.
