Former Indian diplomat Pankaj Saran has stressed the need for a highly advanced and coordinated border management system between Bangladesh and India to better control cross-border crimes while ensuring the legal movement of people and goods.
Speaking during an interaction with a Bangladeshi media delegation at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service in New Delhi, he described ongoing killings along the border as “unfortunate” and said such incidents should not continue under any circumstances.
He noted that responsibility lies on both sides and urged authorities in Bangladesh and India to examine the root causes honestly. According to him, despite multiple agreements and protocols between the border forces and governments, effective implementation remains crucial.
Pankaj Saran, who also serves as convener of NatStrat, pointed out that the border region is often influenced by an illegal economy, which he said creates a dangerous environment involving smuggling, weapons trafficking, and other criminal activities. He added that innocent civilians frequently become victims of this situation.
He emphasised that cooperation between Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) must remain cordial and functional, highlighting that both sides should be able to resolve issues quickly through direct communication rather than mistrust.
The former envoy also called for the use of modern technology, improved communication systems, and stronger institutional cooperation to enhance border security.
He said existing bilateral mechanisms, including regular DG-level meetings and joint coordination efforts, should be continued and strengthened.
Pankaj Saran further warned against extremist influences and illegal trafficking networks, stressing the need for joint efforts to maintain stability in border regions.
He also highlighted broader regional challenges, including unemployment and migration pressures, which, according to him, require coordinated responses from both countries.
