Rescue teams have found the body of a woman buried under rubble following the collapse of an apartment building in east Germany, police said on Thursday.
“Following the deployment of a search dog late on Wednesday evening, emergency services found a person buried under the rubble at around 10:30 pm (local time),” police in the eastern town of Goerlitz said.
“Officers identified the person found as the 25-year-old missing woman from Romania,” it said again.
Search teams have been working mostly by hand to search for signs of life in a pile of bricks and broken timber after a holiday apartment building collapsed on Monday afternoon, fearing the use of heavy equipment could ignite gas.
Two others, another Romanian woman aged 26 and a 48-year-old man with German and Bulgarian nationality, are still missing.
“The cause of the disaster is still unclear,” police said.
“Investigations into the cause, as well as the rescue operation and, in particular, the search for the missing persons, are still ongoing,” they said.
Goerlitz, Germany’s easternmost town, on the Polish border, is known for its historic buildings and has often been used as a location for movie shoots.
The search operation has involved about 140 personnel from the police, fire department, health service, and THW disaster relief agency, along with Polish emergency personnel.
