A police complaint has been lodged in West Bengal against Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee over her alleged remarks linking the Union government to a political killing in Bangladesh.
The complaint, filed on Wednesday with the Cyber Police Station in Siliguri, was submitted by Advocate Rinki Chatterjee Singh of the Calcutta High Court’s Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench, an official confirmed on Thursday.
According to the complaint, Mamata Banerjee, during a public event in Kolkata on 2 June at Rani Rashmoni Sarani, allegedly referred to confidential discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs and suggested a connection between the Union government and a political killing in neighbouring Bangladesh.
The advocate has claimed that such statements were made publicly through speeches and media interactions, and that they were capable of creating confusion and distrust regarding India’s official position and its diplomatic relations with Bangladesh.
The complaint further argues that linking the Union government to a politically sensitive incident in Bangladesh could be seen as an attempt to influence public perception and may have implications for bilateral relations between the two countries.
It also alleges that the remarks were made in a manner intended to gain political advantage and could potentially disturb public order by fuelling misinformation and tension.
Authorities said the complaint is currently under review at the cyber police station.
The Trinamool Congress has not yet issued any response regarding the allegations.
