Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei will be laid to rest on 9 July in his hometown of Mashhad, according to state television reports on Saturday.

The report said the burial had initially been scheduled for March but was postponed due to ongoing conflict and security concerns. The final funeral arrangements will now take place over several days, beginning with ceremonies in Tehran on 4 July, followed by additional religious observances in the holy city of Qom on 7 July, before concluding with the burial in Mashhad on 9 July.

State media noted that the multi-stage funeral process reflects the national significance of the former leader, who governed Iran for nearly 37 years before his death in an Israeli and US airstrike on 28 February, according to the report.

The 4 July start of the funeral ceremonies coincides with United States Independence Day, which this year marks its 250th anniversary, a detail highlighted in Iranian state coverage.

Following his death, leadership responsibilities were transferred to his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed the role of supreme leader in early March. Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei was injured in the same strikes that killed his father and other senior officials. He has not made public appearances since his appointment and is said to be communicating through written statements attributed to him.

The announcement comes as Iran continues to manage the political and ceremonial transition following the loss of its long-serving leader, with state institutions coordinating large-scale memorial arrangements across multiple cities.

Officials have described the funeral as a significant national event, with ceremonies expected to draw wide participation from political, religious and military figures.
