US President Donald Trump is set to host a major mixed martial arts (MMA) event at the White House, turning the South Lawn into an arena for seven Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bouts marking his 80th birthday.
The event, branded “UFC Freedom 250,” will take place inside a specially constructed venue known as “The Claw,” a temporary 92-foot-high arena erected on the White House grounds. The name of the event commemorates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
Now 17 months into his second presidential term, Trump has continued to embrace highly visible and unconventional public appearances. The White House fight card is the latest example of his effort to project strength and maintain public attention during a challenging period of his presidency.
The event comes against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has entered its fourth month and contributed to rising consumer prices in the United States. Recent opinion polls have also suggested growing public concern over the situation, adding pressure on the administration.
Reuters reported that the spectacle also coincides with Trump's efforts to counter suggestions that he is entering a politically weaker phase of his presidency.
Approximately 4,000 spectators are expected to attend the event, where 14 fighters from five different countries will compete in seven MMA contests. The bouts will feature the sport’s signature mix of striking, grappling and submission techniques inside the UFC’s iconic Octagon cage.
The headline attraction of the evening will see UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria defend his status against former interim titleholder Justin Gaethje in a scheduled five-round contest.
The fight card is due to begin at 8pm local time (0000 GMT Monday), marking an unprecedented blend of sports entertainment and presidential pageantry on the White House grounds.
