Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran to end the Middle East conflict will take effect immediately, triggering swift changes in maritime and security arrangements.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Thursday, Shehbaz Sharif said the agreement would be implemented “with immediate effect”, with both sides beginning key steps without delay.
According to him, the first phase of the arrangement includes the instant reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, alongside the immediate lifting of the American naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports.
The Pakistani leader emphasised that the agreement is not merely symbolic but operational from the moment of signing, marking what he described as a significant diplomatic breakthrough.
Shehbaz Sharif also confirmed that Pakistan, with support from Qatar, will host a formal ceremony in Switzerland on Friday. The event will be held to “commemorate this landmark event” and to initiate technical-level discussions related to the implementation of the memorandum.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, is central to the agreement due to its importance for global oil and gas shipments. Its reopening is expected to restore commercial shipping flows that were disrupted during the conflict.
The memorandum also includes broader provisions aimed at de-escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides committing to halt military operations and engage in structured negotiations towards a final settlement in the coming weeks.
