The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has resulted in more than 200 fatalities just over a month since its official declaration, according to the African Union’s primary health agency.

Latest figures released by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) indicate that 202 individuals have succumbed to the virus out of 875 confirmed infections. This equates to a case fatality rate of 23 per cent.

Health officials have expressed profound concern over the logistical and safety hurdles currently impeding efforts to halt the virus. Dr Wessam Mankoula, a medical representative for the Africa CDC, highlighted that the critical process of contact tracing remains alarmingly inadequate. He attributed this shortfall to severe regional security crises and the geographic isolation of certain areas, which continue to obstruct field teams from the Africa CDC, the World Health Organisation, and other allied partners.

Further underscoring the severity of the emergency, the Red Cross cautioned this week that the epidemic—formally declared on 15 May—has not yet reached its peak. The humanitarian organisation warned that establishing comprehensive containment of the virus could require sustained intervention for up to a year.

This crisis marks the 17th Ebola epidemic to strike the expansive Central African nation, and responders are facing unprecedented obstacles. The current outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, a variant for which there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted therapeutic treatments available on the market.

The geographical epicentre of the outbreak spans three northeastern provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Enduring armed conflict and widespread population displacement have systematically destabilised these areas, deeply complicating the delivery of effective public health measures.

The viral threat has also transcended national borders into neighbouring Uganda. However, stringent containment protocols have largely proven effective in the adjacent nation, which has recorded 19 confirmed cases and two fatalities to date. Authorities note that the majority of the Ugandan infections involve individuals who had recently travelled across the border from the DRC.
