Syria has completed the formation of its first Parliament since the fall of the Assad government after interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa appointed the remaining 70 members of the 210-seat legislature.
The appointments mark another milestone in the country's political transition following the collapse of the Assad family's decades-long rule after years of conflict that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, head of Syria's electoral committee, said the new Parliament will hold its inaugural session on Monday. Members will take the oath of office before electing the parliamentary leadership during the first sitting.
The latest appointments include 15 women, bringing the total number of female lawmakers in the new legislature to 22.
The first phase of parliamentary elections took place in October but did not include the southern province of Sweida, where Druze armed groups opposed to the central government continue to wield influence, or northeastern Syria, which was under Kurdish control at the time.
Voting was later held in northeastern Syria in May after government forces regained control of the region following intense fighting earlier this year.
Although elections have not yet been conducted in Sweida, Ahmad al-Sharaa appointed two representatives from the predominantly Druze province to the new Parliament.
According to Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, the legislature will serve a 30-month term. Its primary responsibilities will include drafting a new electoral law and preparing the framework for future nationwide elections.
Syria has been without a functioning Parliament since the December 2024 offensive led by Ahmad al-Sharaa's former Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, which brought an end to the Assad family's more than five decades in power.
