Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is effectively over following a new round of military strikes that has sharply increased tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking during a NATO summit, Trump said he no longer believed the truce remained in effect, describing Iran’s leadership as ‘sick people’ and adding, “As far as I’m concerned, it is over.”
While he acknowledged that diplomatic contacts could continue, the US president suggested that further negotiations were unlikely to produce meaningful progress.
The latest escalation followed US military strikes on more than 80 Iranian-linked targets. Washington said the operation was carried out in response to attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Although Iran has not formally accepted responsibility for the tanker attacks, Tehran later announced strikes against US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, describing them as retaliation for the American operation.
Mark Rutte defended the US military action, saying it was justified and accusing Iran of breaching the ceasefire agreement.
Iran rejected that accusation. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said it was the United States that had violated the truce, placing responsibility for the renewed hostilities on Washington.
The latest exchange of attacks comes despite a 14-page memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Iran last month, which was intended to reinforce the ceasefire and establish a framework for ending hostilities across multiple fronts.
The renewed fighting has raised fresh concerns about regional stability and the future of diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a wider conflict in the Middle East.
