The South Korean navy has recovered the body of a missing seaman apprentice off the eastern coast of the country. The discovery follows an extensive search near the de facto maritime border with North Korea.

Military authorities launched a major rescue operation on Sunday morning. The search involved ten ships and multiple aircraft after the individual failed to report for scheduled duty while aboard a frigate on a routine patrol mission.

The vessel was operating near the Northern Limit Line, which serves as the maritime boundary between the two neighbouring nations. Navy officials confirmed that a patrol boat spotted the missing sailor early on Monday morning, approximately fifty-two kilometres east of the coastal town of Geojin.

Given the proximity to the sensitive sea border, authorities in Seoul had contacted North Korea on Sunday to request humanitarian assistance. South Korean officials feared that the sailor might have drifted into northern waters.

The Unification Ministry confirmed on Monday that the government in Pyongyang had not provided any updates or responses to the request. North Korea has largely ignored communication from the South in recent months, choosing instead to focus on deepening diplomatic ties with Moscow and hosting high-level summits with regional allies.

The recovered body was transferred to another naval vessel and taken to the Donghae Naval Base on the eastern coast. Reports indicated that the sailor was found without a life jacket.

Civilian police forces and military investigators have launched a joint inquiry to determine the exact cause of death. They are also working to uncover the precise circumstances that led to the disappearance from the patrol ship.

The incident occurs at a time of transitioning diplomatic strategies in the region. President Lee Jae Myung has prioritised dialogue and confidence-building measures since taking office last year to ease long-standing border tensions.
