Iran has been shaken by at least 83 earthquakes of different sizes in just one week, according to new data published on Sunday. This sudden wave of earthquakes comes at a time when the country is already dealing with high military tensions in the region.

Data from the University of Tehran’s Institute of Geophysics showed that while most of the tremors were quite small, two medium-sized earthquakes between magnitudes 4 and 5 hit the country. The Iranian Seismological Centre officially tracked these 83 earthquakes between 3 July and 10 July.

Looking closely at the numbers, 71 of the tremors were very small (below magnitude 3), ten were measured between magnitudes 3 and 4, and two crossed into the stronger magnitude 4 to 5 range. The strongest single earthquake during this seven-day period was a magnitude 4.1, which hit the Kerman area on 10 July.

Different parts of the country felt the tremors. The eastern province of Khorasan Razavi had the most activity with ten earthquakes. Meanwhile, Semnan, Kerman, and Fars each felt eight tremors, and Mazandaran felt seven. Even the capital city, Tehran, shook slightly three times, though a few other provinces remained completely quiet.

This busy week follows a highly active year. Between March 2025 and March 2026, Iran recorded a total of 2,380 earthquakes that were magnitude 2.5 or higher. Out of those, 910 were above magnitude 3, 130 were above magnitude 4, and 15 were strong earthquakes above magnitude 5.

Earth experts point out that Iran is located in one of the most earthquake-prone places in the world. The country sits right where two giant pieces of the Earth’s crust—the Arabian and Eurasian plates—are constantly pushing against each other. Experts warn that even though small earthquakes rarely cause massive damage, any shake that happens close to the surface can still be very dangerous if it occurs near big towns or major cities.
