Daily travel in New Delhi was disrupted on Wednesday morning after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation closed 16 stations across its network, citing security concerns related to ongoing political protests.
The metro authority shared the news around 11:30 am local time. The closures affect key stops along major routes, including the Blue, Yellow, and Violet lines. While passengers can still change trains at major hub stations, officials have not said when the closed station gates will reopen.
The Cockroach Janta Party organised protests in the capital, during which security measures were put in place. The sudden closures caused confusion and created long lines, as many people were unable to exit at their regular stops.
Along the Violet line, which connects Kashmere Gate to Ballabgarh, trains continued to stop at affected stations. However, police barricades and security staff blocked passengers who tried to leave at the exit gates.
At Mandi House, a busy central station, large crowds gathered near the closed exits while police watched the area. Many workers and commuters found themselves stuck because multiple stations in a row were closed, forcing them to ride further down the line and take motorbikes or buses to reach their offices.
Police and transit staff remain stationed outside the closed entrances to manage crowds, and travelers are being advised to check routes before setting off.
