Bangladesh's energy demand has become a key concern as global fuel markets remain volatile due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, prompting the government to seek support from the United States to ensure uninterrupted supply.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood made the remarks on Wednesday after a meeting with United States Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.
The minister said Bangladesh is exploring alternative energy import options to reduce risks linked to global supply disruptions. “The government has been taking preparations to import energy from alternative sources amid growing uncertainty over global energy supplies due to the conflict in the Middle East,” he said.
According to Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, concerns over stable fuel availability are rising not only in Bangladesh but worldwide as geopolitical tensions affect global energy markets. “Not only Bangladesh but the whole world is worried about energy supplies. The government is trying to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted supply of energy,” he added.
During the meeting, Bangladesh requested support from the United States to help manage energy demand during the current crisis period. Paul Kapur assured that the matter would be conveyed to relevant authorities in Washington.
The minister said the country’s existing fuel reserves could help meet demand until the Eid holidays or the end of March if consumption is reduced. However, he noted that diesel sales have recently increased sharply across the country, adding pressure on supply.

To address potential shortages, the government has also taken measures to prevent fuel smuggling. The Bangladesh Border Guard has been instructed to strengthen surveillance and patrol operations along border areas to stop illegal fuel transportation.
Iqbal Hassan Mahmood urged citizens and businesses to conserve energy during the current period of uncertainty. He advised reducing unnecessary lighting in shopping malls and events and encouraged greater use of public transport instead of private vehicles.
The government is also working to maintain stability in the power sector. The minister said efforts would be made to keep load-shedding at a tolerable level despite the challenges created by global energy market volatility.
Energy authorities believe that responsible consumption and improved supply coordination will help Bangladesh manage energy demand until global supply conditions stabilise.
